The City and its partners will hold a field exercise in and around Westminster Ponds Thursday. This is an opportunity to test and improve on emergency plans and meets provincial requirements to hold an annual training exercise.

The exercise area will be closed to the public from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 12. This will include the lands and trails in and around Westminster Pond, Tumblesons Pond and Spettigues Pond.

From a distance the public may see a large number of emergency response type vehicles, support vehicles and people in the area.

Media will be provided access to the exercise at the following locations and times. They must follow instructions from the site media liaison about access points and interviews to reduce potential disruption to the exercise.

Site 1: Westminster Ponds 9 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. – take Commissioners Road to Western Counties Road, at the fork turn left and park beside the baseball diamond. Follow the road south to meet up with media liaison Dan Flaherty of the Middlesex London Health Unit.

Site 2: The City’s Emergency Operations Centre 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Media liaison Ellen Hobin of the London Public Library will help provide access to the site and lead media to the Byron Library Branch at approximately 11 a.m. for a mock media scrum that is part of the exercise.

The media are asked to speak to designated spokespeople only to allow other event participants to focus on the exercise.

London Health Science Centre is participating in the exercise, but will not be providing access to the media to the site for the purpose of covering the event.

This work supports the City’s strategic plan, enhancing corporate and community safety by preparing for and responding to security risks and emergency events.
