Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is escalating his opposition to the federal government's carbon tax by threatening to initiate a non-confidence motion in the House of Commons.

The motion is seen as a direct challenge to the Liberal government's climate policy, which includes a plan to incrementally increase the carbon tax to $170 per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 2030. This increase is expected to significantly raise the price of gasoline and other fuels like natural gas and propane.

However, the motion is unlikely to succeed, as the New Democratic Party (NDP) has pledged to support the government through 2025 under a supply-and-confidence agreement. This ensures the government has enough support in the Commons to counter the motion.

Poilievre has been actively campaigning against the carbon tax, embarking on a "spike the tax" tour across the country. His efforts to rally opposition come as the consumer carbon levy is set to rise from $65 to $80 per tonne on April 1, which will add approximately three cents to a litre of gasoline.

The proposed tax increase has also been criticized by seven provincial premiers, who argue that it will exacerbate the already high cost of living driven by inflation and food prices. Despite these objections, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected calls to cancel the increase, emphasizing the importance of taking action on climate change.

The Liberal government has challenged Poilievre and the opposing premiers to propose alternative methods for reducing emissions without imposing financial burdens on Canadians. As the debate intensifies, Poilievre's planned non-confidence motion serves as a strategic move to maintain pressure on the government over the controversial carbon tax issue.
