Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has uncovered that the federal government has expended in excess of $100 million to accommodate asylum seekers in Niagara Falls hotels during the past year.

This expenditure was disclosed as a response to a query raised by Conservative MP Tony Baldinelli, representing Niagara Falls, in the House of Commons in February.

The statistics highlight that nearly 5,000 asylum seekers, predominantly from Nigeria, Venezuela, Kenya, Turkey, and Colombia, found temporary residence in the tourist city's hotels from February 1, 2023, to February 1, 2024.

On average, these refugee claimants were housed for 113 days, with a daily cost amounting to $208 per person, culminating in a total expenditure of approximately $115 million for the year.

The immigration department clarifies that this substantial sum encompasses not only room charges but also meals, services, and security provisions for asylum seekers.

However, it is important to note that the reported figure might not represent the full extent of the expenses.

The department acknowledges that there was a lack of systematic tracking of these costs in a centralized database during the initial months of 2023, specifically between February and March.

Moreover, the financial tally for the period commencing January 1, 2024, remains incomplete, as most of the invoices have yet to be received by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

This disclosure has brought to light the significant financial commitments undertaken by the federal government in addressing the needs of asylum seekers and has sparked a conversation around the efficiency and transparency of such expenditures.
