Four community facilities on Vancouver Island are set to become more energy-efficient and accessible, owing to a combined $5.2 million investment from the federal and local governments. Jonathan Wilkinson announced the initiative, which aims to enhance critical infrastructure while reducing environmental impact and improving local living spaces.

In the District of Saanich, the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre is undergoing significant upgrades, including enhancements to its HVAC system, lighting, and building envelope. These improvements are projected to reduce the facility's energy consumption by up to 40% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 tonnes each year. Additionally, the installation of automatic door openers and revamped reception counters will boost the centre's accessibility, making it a more welcoming space for community engagement and emergency operations.

Further north, on the Tsulquate Reserve in Port Hardy, renovations at Wakas Hall are enhancing energy efficiency and accessibility for the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nation. The project includes the installation of solar panels, LED lighting upgrades, and improved HVAC systems, along with more accessible washrooms, stair lifts, and clearer warning signage.

The Ts'uubaa-asatx Nation Community Centre in Lake Cowichan and the Chilton Arena in the Regional District of Mount Waddington are also seeing similar green transformations. Both are incorporating solar panels and advanced battery storage systems to support sustainable energy use and reduce environmental footprints.

Funded through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program, these projects not only aim to extend the service life of community facilities but also align with Canada's net-zero objectives for 2050. The upgrades will ensure that these buildings are inclusive, accessible, and capable of meeting the needs of their communities.

"Our efforts to revitalize important spaces like the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre reflect our commitment to building vibrant, healthy communities," stated Wilkinson. "We will continue to support projects that enhance the well-being of our neighbourhoods, offering spaces for physical activity, hobbies, and community resources."

Mayor Dean Murdock of the District of Saanich echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the dual benefits of environmental and accessibility improvements. "By upgrading our facility, we not only reduce our greenhouse gas emissions but also ensure that everyone has a place to enjoy arts and community activities in a safe, comfortable environment," he noted.

These strategic upgrades across Vancouver Island exemplify a broader commitment to sustainable development and community well-being, ensuring that public spaces can serve current and future generations effectively.
