To bolster Canada's firefighting needs amidst an escalating wildfire threat, Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced a grant of up to $800,000 today.

The funding was revealed during the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Canadian Legislative Conference held in Ottawa and aims to enhance the training and capacity of structural firefighters across the nation.

Structural firefighters are those specifically trained to tackle fires in enclosed spaces, including residential buildings, commercial properties, and public infrastructure.

A crucial part of the funding will also support the country’s readiness and response strategies for wildland urban interface fires, which are fires occurring where developed areas converge with wild or natural landscapes.

These interface fires are particularly concerning due to their potential to endanger lives and cause significant disruptions, including the spread of thick smoke and necessary evacuations in populated regions.

Approximately 10 percent of Canadians live in interface areas, highlighting the urgency and scope of addressing wildfire threats effectively.

Building on a previous investment of $400,000 in the IAFF’s Responding to the Interface (RTI) program last year, the new funds will enable the training of up to 325 structural firefighting personnel.

This step is part of the Government of Canada’s broader commitment to train 1,000 wildland firefighters, enhancing the national response to increasingly severe wildfires fueled by climate change.

Minister Wilkinson emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “With the acceleration of climate change and this year’s wildfire season already upon us, the health and safety of Canadians remain our top priority. We are committed to partnering with the IAFF to provide the essential training needed to protect Canadian lives and livelihoods.”

Harjit Sajjan, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness, also commented on the funding, noting the critical role of enhanced training and resources in preparing for more intense and frequent wildfires.

Echoing same sentiments, Edward A. Kelly, General President of the IAFF, highlighted the direct link between well-prepared firefighters and community safety. “It’s critical we prepare structural firefighters with the necessary training to operate safely in such dangerous environments. When firefighters are safe, the communities we vow to protect are safe. We are committed to continuing our work with the Government of Canada to ensure firefighters—and the communities they serve—are better protected in the face of this new reality.”
